Barely six days to the start of this year’s general elections, Rivers State Deputy Governor, Tele Ikuru, yesterday dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ikuru’s defection hit APC members like a thunderbolt, as many of them expected his once unalloyed loyalty to Governor Rotimi Amaechi to remain intact till the end of his administration. Amaechi is the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation. But some people saw the defection coming, because of the perceived cold war between the deputy governor and the state party chairman, Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.
The two men are from Andoni Local Government Area. There had been no love lost between them over who controls the party structures in the local government area. Besides, those who spoke to Daily Sun said it was long expected, considering the fact that the National Vice Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, is his political father and the one responsible for his appointment as the deputy governor.
Announcing his defection in his office at the Government House yesterday, Ikuru, who took his boss and others unawares, in a statement entitled: “A call on the conscience of the people of Rivers State,” said it was out of extreme loyalty to his boss that he and other disillusioned Rivers people joined the APC in 2013.
He disclosed how he had been going through what the called, extreme mental and emotional agony, adding that after analysing the leadership of APC, he realised that it is a party of rebels.
“Ever since, as the true nature and motives of APC are unveiled, I have continued to twist and turn in extreme mental and emotional agony. The more I struggle to belong, the more the Rivers man in me rejects the APC.
After carefully studying, interacting and analysing the leadership of the party, I have come to the sad conclusion that the APC is a party of rebels, insurgents and anarchists, clothed in robes of pretense and deceit. APC is a party founded on deception and it thrives on unholy propaganda and falsehood.
“I therefore, on behalf of my teeming supporters, and my humble self denounce the APC and we all jointly and severally resign our membership of the APC. My dear people of Rivers State, we of this generation, will not in good conscience expect forgiveness and compassion from our forebears, posterity, and the spirit of our unborn generations if it is recorded in the annals of history that after eight years of Rivers people supporting leaders from all parts of this country with our votes and resources, we were the same that witchhunted and hounded down the very first ever President from this region, granted us by providence, I wash my hands off this treachery,” the deputy governor said.
